Can LA Governor Jeff Landry Legally Serve as Greenland Envoy?

February 9, 2026

On December 22nd, 2025, President Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a “Special Envoy” to Greenland, a North American territory belonging to Denmark. The appointment is part of an ongoing push from the Trump administration to incorporate Greenland into U.S. territories in the name of national security, as the northern territory is well placed geographically for specific areas of defense.

While parties opposed to Trump’s claim to Greenland call the whole movement an overreach of power, many Louisianians are concerned over the legality of Landry’s appointment, specifically. Louisiana law prohibits one individual from holding two separate public offices at one time. Opposition members immediately began pointing out the potential discrepancy and debating whether or not Landry could serve as Louisiana governor and as an envoy to Greenland.

Honor’s Societies Aren’t a Scam: A Look at Scholarships

My first year at Centenary, I got an email from Professor Jessica Hawkins, a professor in the Communications Department and also the advisor for our school’s chapter of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society. The email was a warning that the messages we were getting from Alpha Chi were not spam, that they were, in fact, legitimate offers to joining the national honor society…for a small fee of fifty-five dollars.

For many students, the registration fee is enough to delete the email, marking it off as a money-making scheme. How many students had their parents pay a hundred dollars in high school to join NHS, only to receive a free car sticker and a bi-monthly email? I immediately thought the same thing—what will I actually get out of paying to join an honor society besides graduate cords and a line on my CV?

Centenary, The Highlands, and Hope Connections

A 10-minute drive east of Centenary’s campus, just past the outskirts of the Highland neighborhood boundary and tucked into the corner of the I-49 and I-20 interchange sits an industrial region of the city. After passing under I-49, the Highland greenery and homes quickly give way to cracked concrete, railways, and roads under seemingly perpetual construction. This is the home of Hope Connections, a shelter and service provider for the homeless in Shreveport and the greater Northwest Louisiana Parishes.

Surrounding Hope is crisscrossing railways by warehouses as well as construction and electrical suppliers, large open concrete lots, and a golfcart dealership. The only thing like Hope is their neighbor Christian Services which serves two meals a day, everyday, for anyone who comes. These two non-profit organizations stand in deep contrast to the industrial zone surrounding them.
