Homecoming 2022 Recap: Unleash the Spirit

Centenary’s Homecoming Week is a great opportunity for students to get competitive, have fun with their friends, and, most importantly, show some school spirit. Each year the week’s events are funded by the SGA and coordinated by its Campus Engagement committee, which was led by VP Stan Melton this year. Other committee members are Andrea Kay, Cayman Hawkins, Sarah Murphy, Avery Cauley, Anacelia Galeano, and Jaden Thrasher. This year’s homecoming theme was ‘Unleash the Spirit.’ Following tradition, campus organizations received points for their participation each time their members participated in events throughout the week. On Saturday, Zeta Tau Alpha was announced as the winner at the Lacrosse Alumni Game.

On Monday, October 31st, the Cheer and Dance teams performed at the Caf. Deck, while students made sand art in small glass vials. That evening, the CCLA Athletics Spooktacular took place at 6 p.m. at Mayo Field.

On Tuesday, students tie-dyed their homecoming t-shirts and entered a giveaway contest on the Caf. Deck.

On Wednesday, the Cafeteria hosted its annual “Brinner” from 8-10 p.m. Students helped themselves to chocolate-chip pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, smoothies, and more, while organizations competed in a timed window painting competition. The Conglomerate competed this year with a window completed by our Design Chief, Aubrey Salazar, and help from our Editor-in-Chief, Emilie Adams. The winner of the competition, the Chemistry Club, was later announced on Saturday at the Tailgate event.

On Thursday, Chalk the Walk took place from 5-7 p.m. next to the SUB and the Shell. Students came together to create chalk illustrations on the pavement. The Maroon Jackets also hosted an Alumni Dinner, honoring and awarding alumni, in the Whited Room at 6 p.m.

On Friday, campus organizations competed in the Gumbo and Cookie Cook-off, as well as the Banner Competition. This event was held in the Gold Dome an hour before Maroon Madness at 7 p.m. Because no athletic events were scheduled on Friday this year, Senator Andrea Kay worked with the basketball team to organize Maroon Madness, which included a dunk competition, a 3-point contest, and a free t-shirt giveaway, followed by an expedition game between Maroon and White. Later that night, Greek Life hosted Panhellenic and IFC Open Houses.

On Saturday, campus organizations participated in a Tailgate from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside of the Gold Dome. The organizations each set up their own tents and provided a variety of barbeque. Then, at 12 p.m., the school’s current and former lacrosse players competed against each other in the Lacrosse Alumni Game, and the Homecoming Court was announced. VP of Campus Engagement, Stan Melton, was crowned King, SGA Senator Tori Ligman as Queen, Markiese Boykin, a Leading Resident Assistant, as Prince, and Maroon Jackets President Camryn Herbert, as Princess. Other members of the Homecoming Court were the BSU President Morgan Bradford, SGA President Jonathan Okereke, Chris Dennis from the baseball team, SGA Senator Caymen Hawkins, Chi Omega President Gracie Napier, Audrey Laper from the cheer team, Alexa Hinojosa from the women’s soccer team, and Shelby Roy also from the cheer team. The Conglomerate’s Sports Editor, Kyle Comi, was also a member of the Court. Following the Lacrosse Alumni Game was the Swimming Intrasquad Meet at 1 p.m. and the choir’s annual performance, “Rhapsody in View,” at 7 p.m. The choir performed Twitterlieder, composed by Dr. James Eakin, a Centenary alumnus, and current faculty member. The piece was written about life’s journey and features three parts: Youthful Age, Middle Age, and Old Age.
