Letter from the Editor: Being the First Voice

Like shown in Crystal Wilkinson’s Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghost, food and cooking are a good way to connect with family and other people you care about in the past and the present. Taste and smell are the two senses that can most easily trigger people’s memories, so with Wilkinson on our minds, the Congo staff were asked to share recipes that hold special meaning to them: the dishes that remind them of home, loved ones, and moments worth keeping close. These recipes each have their own story and connection, and they are meant to be passed from one kitchen to another. Enjoy!

A 10-minute drive east of Centenary’s campus, just past the outskirts of the Highland neighborhood boundary and tucked into the corner of the I-49 and I-20 interchange sits an industrial region of the city. After passing under I-49, the Highland greenery and homes quickly give way to cracked concrete, railways, and roads under seemingly perpetual construction. This is the home of Hope Connections, a shelter and service provider for the homeless in Shreveport and the greater Northwest Louisiana Parishes.

“Culture” is one of the goals used in Centenary’s Trek program, and Thursday, Oct. 2, was the Trek Culture Module Fair held in the Whited Room during lunchtime. Eleven different booths were set up by different faculty members with places from right here on campus to all the way in Australia. With students from seniors to freshmen either trying to figure out where they want to go this May or just getting a head start on ideas for where they will want to go in the future.

For most athletes, a large part of their lives is dedicated to the sport they fell in love with. However, for all athletes, there will come a day when they have to return their jerseys, hang up their cleats, and walk off the court or field one last time. A huge part of an athlete's identity is their sport, but just because the days of competing are over does not mean they have to or should retire their passion for the game. A great way to shift a love for sport into a career is through sports journalism. Whether it is writing, reporting, or broadcasting, this field entails a variety of roles that young journalists can be successful in doing. Centenary’s Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications of six years, Patrick Meehan, shares his insights as to how to get a foot in the door when it comes to a career in sports journalism.
