Honoring Black History Month

In continuing to celebrate and honor Black History Month, I was able to talk to Morgan Bradford. Besides being a senior here at Centenary, Morgan is also President of the Black Student Union organization on campus. She has done a fantastic job throughout her presidency so far, and I am very glad I was able to interview her during this month.

The Vision for Ridgewood Middle School

On Friday January 20, 2023, Ridgewood Middle School hosted a handful of Centenary students, including myself, and allowed us to talk to their 8th grade students about high school and college. This event was made possible through the joint effort of Dr. Christal Schoen from Centenary and Mr. Joseph Johnson of Ridgewood Middle School. It served as one of the last events for this year’s Dream Week.

Electing a Speaker to the U.S. House of Representatives

In the United States Congress, the House of Representatives (the bigger chamber), elects a Speaker during the first session of every new Congress. The Speaker is second in the line of presidential succession after the vice president. They are in charge of the organization of debate and House accounting. Typically, although not a constitutional rule, the Speaker is a member of the majority party. They often act as a spokesperson for the party and lead discussions in a manner that benefits their party’s interests . . .

Dear Reader…

Welcome to the Spring 2023 volume of The Conglomerate! We’re so glad to be back and see all of you (even though we can’t actually see your faces…). We hope you’ve all enjoyed the holiday season and found some way to relax. I know the staff, Executive Board, and I made the most of it - even if that meant doing absolutely nothing. Despite being away from the paper for almost a month, I have been waiting for us to start publishing again. Little did I think that it would be the day so soon . . .

Into the Mag with Editor-in-Chief of Pandora

As most students may very well know, Pandora is Centenary’s art and literary magazine and one of the only outlets for students to express themselves creatively on campus. But have you ever wondered where the magical mags come from or how they became so popular on campus? I spoke with Pandora’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Jane Storms, to get the inside scoop.

The Purpose Generation: Gen-Z Grows into a Political Force

I turned eighteen last December, marking me as an adult. Sure, I couldn’t drink, smoke, or rent a car, but I excitedly began to count down to the 2022 midterm elections because I could finally do what I’d been waiting years to do: vote.

The Halloween Tragedy in Seoul’s Itaewon District

Holidays are always a cause for celebration and partying amongst young people, especially since the lightening of COVID-19 restrictions, and Halloween was no exception this year. In cities across the world, costumed teens and young adults gathered at clubs and bars to celebrate the holiday. In South Korea, where COVID restrictions had only recently been lifted, a record number of people traveled to Itaewon, a center for nightlife in Seoul, for the popular Halloween celebration. Unfortunately, with an unprecedented amount of party-goers in the narrow streets of Itaewon, the festivities quickly turned dangerous.

SGA Town Hall Recap: Let’s Get the Facts Straight

On October 4th, 2022, the Student Government Association (SGA) hosted its first Town Hall since 2019. The event was newsworthy, to say the least. The Whited Room was packed with around two hundred student-athletes, SAAC representatives, and the entire SGA.

Greek Life at Centenary: A History

The five main social Greek organizations at Centenary have been established for a while. Some of us may know some of the stories from their early years or just from years past, but how many of us know about the Greek organizations that have not been on campus in years? Greek organizations started at universities in the United States as early as the late 1700s, so the history of Greek life is as old as our country.

10 Instagram Accounts I am Obsessing Over

I am chronically addicted to Instagram. Honestly, it is embarrassing how much time I spend on this app. Pretty much any other social media platform disgusts me. I’m not just endlessly scrolling, comparing myself to people I went to high school with (even though, yes, I am doing that too). I justify my absurd amount of screen time by following super-cool-totally-niche art accounts. As an artsy person who rarely values anything more than a good aesthetic, it is my duty to no longer gatekeep them. Here are ten accounts that make the app worth it for me.

A Centennial Celebration of News & Worldview

With The Conglomerate’s long history spanning exactly 100 years, it only makes sense that the newspaper has been privy to some of Centenary’s most monumental moments. Many of these moments were documented in the News & Worldview section, which today still includes reports of campus infrastructural changes, incoming and outgoing faculty, messages from the President, campus-wide activities, and more.

Here’s to 100 Years of the Conglomerate

On October 13, 1922, the Centenary community was introduced to their very own student newspaper, The Conglomerate. This paper, which very fittingly was published on a Friday the 13th, helped keep the student body informed of various events and happenings that took place over campus. As years went by and The Congo was run by different students every year, the paper began to evolve and develop its own personality. When seeing how the paper began to where it is now, numerous topics, layout designs, and writing styles were introduced and became crucial parts of future publications.
