1. The Social Network

This is one of my all-time favorite movies, so it is not surprising that this is my favorite movie of the month. I’ve watched it so many times that I have certain lines memorized, but it never fails to entertain me. It is beautifully edited, and the cast is so talented. The Social Network is currently on Netflix. But it never stays for too long, so I would watch it now while you still can . . .

If you’ve interacted with me in the past couple of weeks, there is a very high chance that you have heard me talking about dragons. I recently read Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros which is a new adult book set in a war college for dragon riders, and ever since then, I have been mildly obsessed with dragons.

It is officially spooky season, and with that in mind, there’s no better time of year to cozy up with a blanket and a hot drink and watch a movie (unless you’re in Shreveport, in which case, you’ll probably cozy up with a fan on the highest setting and a nice cold drink until this awful heatwave passes). So, let’s talk about some of the best movies to watch as we get closer to Halloween . . .

Sunday, September 24th was pretty eventful for both Taylor Swift fans and football fans for the same reason. There’s a sentence I never thought I’d write. There had been rumors swirling around Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift possibly being together for a few days and many people–like myself–were wondering if they were a joke or not. Travis Kelce’s brother was on a radio show saying they were 100% true and then a few days later he came out saying that was a joke people weren’t supposed to take seriously . . .

In 2009, Niell Blomkamp directed the sci-fi film District 9. With rave reviews and critical recognition, including a Best Picture nomination from the Academy, Blomkamp seemed to be the next big name in science fiction.

Welcome back dearest Congo readers and an extra special welcome to those joining us. My name is Jacqueline Deville. I am a sophomore and the PR Head for the Conglomerate and Shreveport- Bossier has been my home for 10 years now. I know from experience that if you don’t know where to look, it can be difficult for newcomers to find fun things to do, especially for free. However, I hope to point you in the right direction so that you can bloom where you are planted! Here are some free activities that can help you to (hopefully) fall in love with the city the way I have . . .

“Barbenheimer” is the term that has been used to suggest a double feature of the two blockbuster movies that released on the same day a few weeks ago, on July 21st, those movies being Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring actress Margot Robbie, and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy. These were arguably the two most anticipated movies of the summer, and as someone who has seen both movies twice already, they do not disappoint . . .

First, what’s been your favorite moment working for the Congo?

My favorite part of the Congo so far was our first issue we put out when the paper came back. Seeing everyone work together to accomplish something we didn’t know could work was so rewarding . . .

Writing a feature for a person who deserves the world, both figuratively and literally, can be very tricky. Not tricky in the sense that there’s nothing to talk about, because well, there is so much to talk about when it comes to Jordan Fong. When you write about a person as wonderful as her, you want to be able to do both your piece and her justice. This is my shot at that.

Taylor Swift has been touring the US on her much anticipated Eras Stadium Tour since March of 2023. This past weekend, she played three nights at Houston’s NRG Stadium to very enthusiastic crowds. The writer of this article was lucky enough to snag tickets to the Friday, April 21st concert, so in case you couldn’t be there, I’ll recap it for you . . .

This Column is a profile for the important people to know around Centenary. This issue was an interview with Red River Poetry Society President Reece Maguire. Reece is a junior English major with a concentration in Creative Writing. She currently holds the positions of Junior Editor for Pandora literary and art magazine, copy editor for The Conglomerate, vice president of Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, and a member of La Légion Louisianaise. She also currently holds the title of 2022-2023 Red River Poetry Society (RRPS) president. She became president of the Poetry Society this year after her predecessor, Jordan Fong, passed the torch.

Centenary College of Louisiana provides a wide range of courses and opportunities that are centered around the arts; however, many students are unaware of the extent of these programs and experiences. For instance, Professor Shea Hembrey, who is the assistant professor of art, designed the Studio Art curriculum to encourage every student majoring in the field to create a show during their senior year. Hembrey built this experience in order to emulate the real world of art, stating that “this is  how artists work generally. Artists work for years at a time on a project for an exhibit” and this senior  show teaches the students “presentation skills not just studio skills because they are thinking about a  viewer.” 

People love following trends. From making slime in the early 2010’s to pouring buckets of ice on our heads for a camera, if it is trending people will participate. However, with the rise of fast fashion and social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, the idea of “being on trend” has been taken to the extreme. In search of clicks and views, people are overhauling their closets and buying new items week after week in an attempt to stay on trend.

Inspired by the Choir, Kappa Sigma, and SGA playing assassins within their organizations, our campus Lord and Savior, Skeeter the Catahoula, wanted to play a game the entire campus could participate in. So, he decided to host a Centenary College Hunger Games; the tributes being anyone on campus, including faculty or staff. The Reaping was held the day before the Games on March 22nd during lunch on the Caf Deck. Instead of taking the time to divide people up into districts intentionally, some of the paper strips were put into twelve labeled buckets that RHA used for their raffles . . .

Household name 50 Cent has taken a liking to our very own Shreveport . . .

Recently, I’ve been watching old seasons of Project Runway on Hulu, and the last season I watched was season twelve: the most dramatic season of Project Runway I have ever watched . . .
