Celebrate Black History Month in Shreveport

February is nationally dedicated to celebrating and recognizing Black American’s history, culture, and contributions to the U.S. It is a time to support and uplift Black voices in all fields and manners. There are online resources and articles you can check out- Good Good Good Co. offers 37 Ways to Intentionally Celebrate Black History Month, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) declares this year’s theme in Black History Month 2025: We Proclaim It,  and History, more commonly known as the History Channel, has an updated Black History Month article covering origins with photo galleries and further readings. Shreveport offers several opportunities to engage with Black History Month through local community events. 

Starting off, the Robinson Film Center (RFC), in partnership with the Centenary Film Society, is presenting the 2025 CineNoir: Black Voices in Film series. Through February 6th RFC will be showing local and regionally made independent features, documentaries, and short films like 2023 Film Prize winner The Candy Lady. alongside critically acclaimed studio productions such as Nickel Boys. Centenary students can attend any showing for free with their Centenary ID and, through support from SGA, concessions are also free for the week. See the complete event schedule on RFC’s website.

The Southern University Museum of Art at Shreveport (SUMAS) states their mission as “to assure that the art, artifacts, and other treasured works of Africans, African Americans and their descendants are accessible to the community in an organized and cherished collection.” Their collections are dedicated to public education and feature a range of art collections. SUMAS is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and admission is free to everyone. All across the Shreve Memorial Library branches are various events including movie showings, children and teen education and creative programs, book discussions, trivia nights, story time programs, and craft classes. Bossier Parish Libraries will be hosting the Black Author & Artist Expo 2025 on the 7th and 8th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bossier Central Library, 7204 Hutchison Drive. Across the two days there are many local artists, stylists, and professionals invited to speak and be honored for their contribution to the Bossier Parish community. This is another free event.

On the 11th the Meadows Museum will have the Celebration of Black Composers and Poets at 7:30 p.m. A joint program between the Hurley School of Music, Red River Poetry Society, and Black Student Union that will feature performances and readings inspired by and based on well known Black composers, poets, and authors. 

There are sure to be more events announced as the month goes on so keep an eye on local news sources and social media to stay updated. Be sure to participate in these local events and explore the ways Shreveport is honoring Black history.
