Centenary STUNT Team Inaugural Season Begins

On Saturday, February 8th, the Centenary STUNT team attended a tournament hosted by Connor State in Warner, OK. The tournament, in which the Centenary Ladies played four games, marked the beginning of their historic season. This is the first time any college in Louisiana has played in an official STUNT game and the first time the Ladies took the mat. The athletes took home two wins against Southwest Baptist and fell in their matches against Connor State.

STUNT is an emerging sport under the NCAA. The sport was officially recognized for DIII schools last year, and Centenary College was one of the first schools in the nation to join in the division. STUNT uses the elements of cheerleading but in a head-to-head game style more suitable to official sport scoring methods. Each game consists of four quarters: Partner Stunt, Pyramids & Tosses, Jumps & Tumbling, and Team Routine. Teams are sent official routines to learn before the start of the season, with up to eight learned routines per quarter. Coaches then alternate calling routine numbers for their athletes to perform against the opposing team. The most successful team is awarded the point; the team with the most points by the end of the game wins. In the event of a tie, both teams are given a point. In the event of too many deductions, no team is awarded a point. Games can be played in four-round quarters or two-round quarters, depending on the preference of the school.

Under the direction of Head Coach Kaylee King, the sport holds fourteen athletes on its roster with hopes of expanding in the coming seasons. Athletes use cheer elements like stunting, jumps, and tumbling, but several of our athletes are multidisciplinary, coming from sports like powerlifting and dance.

On Saturday, the Houlas faced Southwest Baptist and Connor State, playing both teams twice in a tournament style. In the first game, Centenary won 6-0 against SWB. Senior Avery Cauley and Junior Jo Hoffman acted as team captains for the coin toss. Avery Cauley was awarded MVP of the game for her tumbling performance in Jumps & Tumbling. Cauley plays as a flyer and tumbler

Centenary fell to Connor State in the second game 0-12. Sophomore Kaitlynne Anderson and Freshman Bry Hutcherson acted as team captains for the coin toss. Sophomores Ezmeriah Gonzalesz and J’Anna Sweat and Junior Alli Ledoux were awarded MVP of the game. Gonzalez plays as a side base, flyer, and tumbler, Sweat plays as a flyer, and Ledoux plays as a main base.

Centenary won again against Southwest Baptist in their third game, scoring 8-1 with a tie point in a Jumps & Tumbling routine. Junior Dalila Ramirez and Sophomore Harleigh Doherty acted as team captains for the coin toss. J’Anna Sweat was awarded MVP again for her work flying the top of the pyramids in Quarter Two.

Centenary lost to Connor State for their last game, but this time scoring 3-10. Centenary was able to steal points in Pyramids & Tosses during Quarters Two and Four. Sophomores Ezmeriah Gonzalez and Bri Thompson acted as team captains for the coin toss. Sophomore Leah Dawson was awarded MVP of the game. Dawson plays as a back spot.

Cauley, Gonzalez, Anderson, and Freshman Trinity Bustamento amassed the highest stats among their teammates and were dubbed “Key Players” for the tournament. Anderson plays as a flyer and base. Bustamento plays as a base.
